Understanding the Kansas Medicaid Adult Dental Benefit
The Medicaid program covers dental care for adults, including cleanings, fillings, and dentures.

Starting in 2022 the Kansas Legislature approved funding to extend dental coverage to adults enrolled in Medicaid (KanCare). The Legislature added coverage for dentures in 2023 and in 2024 added funding to cover dental exams, x-rays, and cleanings for adults.

This new funding is the biggest step forward in the state's history in making dental care available to some of the most underserved Kansans. All adults covered by Medicaid now have access to a nearly comprehensive set of dental benefits.

The new KanCare adult dental benefits went into effect on July 1, 2022 and the denture coverage went into effect on July 1, 2023. Dental exam and cleaning coverage went into effect July 1, 2024.

The following services are covered without an annual maximum:

  • Dental examinations and x-rays
  • Dental cleanings
  • Fillings and crowns
  • Silver diamine fluoride
  • Periodontal (gum disease) care
  • *Dentures, partials, and repairs
  • Transportation to dental appointments for these services is also available.

*Dentures and partials have some restrictions on how often they can be replaced.
